About Ice Climbing
The UIAA Ice Climbing World Tour is an annual ice climbing competition organized by the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA). The UIAA has regulated and governed the sport of competition ice climbing since the first World Tour in 2002.
Every year, three to six events are held all over the world in which men and women compete in speed climbing and lead climbing competitions. Every 2 years the World Championships is held to award the top men and women competitors from the previous 2 years.
Speed Ice Climbing
Friday, February 28 - Qualifiers & Finals
Sunday, March 2 - Community Competition & Canadian Nationals
How fast can you climb a wall of ice?!
The speed-climbing routes are on a standardized vertical wall of solid ice that is a minimum of 12 metres (40 feet) tall. Climbers use specialized speed climbing ice tools to complete the climb in a matter of seconds. The climbers go head to head to see who is the fastest.
Lead Ice Climbing
Friday, February 28 - Qualifiers
Saturday, March 1 - Semi-Finals & Finals
Sunday, March 2 - Community Competition & Canadian Nationals
How high can you climb?!
The lead climbing routes are held on a combination of ice formations and bolted dry artificial surfaces (similar to an indoor rock climbing wall). Climbers use ice climbing tools to employ techniques called dry-tooling. The climbers are given a time limit to see who can make it to the top of the most difficult route.
